Vincent Kompany "couldn't care less" about Wayne Rooney captaincy

Vincent Kompany says that he "couldn't care less" about Wayne Rooney being handed the captain's armband at rivals Manchester United.

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has admitted that he "couldn't care less" about Wayne Rooney being appointed the new Manchester United captain.

New manager Louis van Gaal has handed the armband to the England international for the upcoming season following Nemanja Vidic's departure.

When asked by Sky Sports News to give his thoughts on the appointment, Kompany said: "Wayne has been at the club for a long time. Whatever has been happening for United at that time, he's always been at the centre of it.

"Most of the time they've won a lot except for last year obviously. I think having the best player as captain is never a bad choice, but at the same time, in all honesty I'm focused on Man City and to say in the softest way - I couldn't care less to be honest."

Kompany guided City to their second league title in three years last season under manager Manuel Pellegrini.
