Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho helped convince Scott McTominay to choose Scotland over England, according to the Manchester United midfielder's grandfather.

The grandfather of Manchester United youngster Scott McTominay has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho were keen for the player to commit his international future to Scotland.

The 21-year-old qualified for both England and Scotland, and recent reports have claimed that the midfielder has chosen the latter.

McTominay, who has made 16 appearances in all competitions for United this season, was born and raised in England, but he is eligible to play for Scotland due to his father's heritage.

Now, the midfielder's grandfather Frank has revealed that ex-United manager Ferguson and the club's current boss played an influential role in McTominay deciding his international future.

"Sir Alex Ferguson was keen for Scott to play for Scotland as well. He was up front about it. I know that for a fact," Frank told The National. "I can say that without fear of getting contradicted. That has been kept under wraps. He and Jose Mourinho were both quite keen on it over the last month or two.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has been very good with Scott over the years. He gave him his first contract with Manchester United when he was 16 before he retired and then made sure it was extended when he was 18. He seems to get on well with him. I have seen them talking."

McTominay will be hoping to make an appearance this weekend when United take on arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.
