Sunderland's Wes Brown successful with red card appeal

The Football Association overturn the decision to send off Wes Brown, meaning that the Sunderland defender will not have to serve a one-match ban.

Sunderland defender Wes Brown has won his appeal against the red card that he received during Saturday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The 35-year-old was dismissed by referee Roger East following a second-half incident that saw United striker Radamel Falcao felled inside the penalty area.

However, replays showed that despite Brown being in close proximity, it was in fact his teammate John O'Shea that had committed the foul on the Colombian.

The Black Cats subsequently appealed the decision and upon review, the Football Association has upheld the claim of wrongful dismissal.

As a result, Brown will be available for selection to manager Gus Poyet for tomorrow night's trip to fellow strugglers Hull City.
