Manchester City reportedly suffer a blow in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, who has no plans to leave the Spanish capital.

Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez reportedly has no plans to leave the club amid links with Manchester City.

The Uruguay international is yet to pen an extension on his existing deal at the Wanda Metropolitano, which expires in 2023, and both Chelsea and Man City have been linked with a summer swoop for the defender.

Gimenez is normally one of the first names on the Atletico team sheet, but he has endured a frustrating season with injuries under Diego Simeone, starting just 16 La Liga games.

However, Marca reports that Gimenez is not thinking about a departure from the club, meaning that Man City will have to look elsewhere in their search for defensive reinforcements.

The report adds that the 26-year-old is hoping to make up for lost time in the 2021-22 campaign, and he feels at home in the Spanish capital, in spite of the fact that several clubs across Europe are taking an interest.

Gimenez has made a total of 213 appearances for Atletico since arriving from Danubio in 2013, winning one La Liga title and one Europa League in that time.
