Former Liverpool striker Tony Hateley dies aged 72

Former Liverpool striker Tony Hateley passes away at the age of 72.

Liverpool have announced that the club's former striker Tony Hately has passed away at the age of 72.

Hateley, who was signed from Chelsea for a then club-record fee of £96,000 by Bill Shankly, spent a year with the Anfield outfit, scoring 28 goals in 56 appearances in the process.

A statement on the Reds' official website read: "Liverpool Football Club was today saddened to learn of the passing of former striker Tony Hateley, aged 72.

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club go out to his family and friends at this sad time."

Hately began his career at Notts County, before having spells at Aston Villa, Coventry City, Birmingham City and Oldham.

He ended his playing career in America with Boston Minutemen.
