Liverpool striker Christian Benteke 'suffers fresh injury blow'

Liverpool striker Christian Benteke could miss this weekend's match against Chelsea after reportedly suffering medial knee ligament damage.

Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is a doubt for this weekend's Premier League clash against Chelsea after reportedly suffering medial knee ligament damage.

The 24-year-old had only returned from a hamstring problem last week, but it is believed that the Belgian picked up a fresh injury during Sunday's 1-1 draw against Southampton.

According to The Express, Liverpool are hoping that Benteke's ligaments have only tweaked, but the striker has been ruled out of tonight's Capital One Cup tie against Bournemouth after undergoing a hospital scan on Monday.

There are concerns that the forward will not recover in time to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, leaving Divock Origi as the club's only fit recognised striker.

Daniel Sturridge is still nursing a knee problem and Danny Ings is expected to miss the rest of the season with cruciate ligament damage.
