Tom Cleverley desperate to earn England place

Tom Cleverley admits that earning a regular place in the England squad was one of the reasons behind his move to Everton.

Tom Cleverley has admitted that earning a regular spot in the England squad is a priority as he prepares for his first season with Everton.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Toffees on a free transfer earlier this summer, was handed a place in Roy Hodgson's squad for the matches against Republic of Ireland and Slovenia but he did not make an appearance in either game.

However, Cleverley believes that he can force his way into Hodgson's plans again by becoming a key player for Everton after showing glimpses of his best form on loan at Aston Villa.

"Looking at our squad, we have some good, young internationals, and that was another reason why I joined Everton because if I can get some good form here then I have got a shout of getting back into the England squad," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"There are a lot of positives in joining this squad and getting back in the England squad is definitely one of them.

"Even though I didn't get a cap it was good to be back in the squad and see the new faces I'd not played with before. I really felt at home there again. Hopefully I can keep my place there."

Cleverley won the last of his 13 caps in November 2013.
