Andre Villas-Boas calls for referee punishment system

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas believes that refereeing decisions should be reviewed and punished if performances are not good enough.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has called for referees to be punished if their performances are not good enough.

Villas-Boas was unhappy with Howard Webb's decision to award two penalties in last week's 3-3 draw with Manchester United.

The Portuguese manager believes that there should be a system in place where incidents are reviewed by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), and action taken if necessary.

"Now it is up to [PGMOL general manager] Mike Riley and the governing bodies to decide if the refereeing is up to the right level and [if not] to punish the ref," the Chelsea boss said.

"My view on our last game is that, if a referee is going to award two penalties away from home to the same team, he should be 100% sure they are both penalties.

"Howard Webb was obviously 100% sure in his own mind - my opinion is different, that he was wrong, end of story."

Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League, just one point ahead of fifth-place Newcastle.
