Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert insists that he understands the frustration of fans following Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has insisted that he understands the frustration of fans following Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home to Wigan Athletic.

Sections of home supporters at Villa Park walked out in the 56th minute when Wigan scored their third goal of the afternoon.

When asked if he understood their anger, Lambert told BBC Sport: "Absolutely I can understand it. I pick the team, it's my responsibility. The crowd have been brilliant with me and that's why I can't say anything against them.

"You have to pick yourselves back up and keep fighting. We certainly know we're in a fight but this club has been in a fight for a couple of years so it's nothing new. But we don't want to be in this position."

The defeat has left 17th-placed Villa one point above the relegation zone.
