Former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell wants current boss Roberto Martinez to stay with the club despite their relegation.

Former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell has called on current boss Roberto Martinez to stay with the club despite their relegation from the Premier League on Tuesday evening.

The Latics succumbed to a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal to consign them to Championship football next season.

Martinez has been linked with the job at Everton next season after David Moyes takes over at Manchester United, but Jewell wants the Spaniard to stay with his current club.

"He might feel he owes [club owner] Dave Whelan and wants to stay for another season to get them back up," Jewell told Sky Sports News after the game.

"I hope he stays. Whatever players stay or whoever he brings in, he has to start a new era trying to get Wigan back into the Premier League and it is not easy."

The result comes just three days after the Latics beat Manchester City to lift the FA Cup on Saturday, meaning the North-West outfit became the first team to win the trophy and be relegated in the same season.
