Arsene Wenger: 'German trio will miss start of season'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that the players who represented Germany at the World Cup finals won't be ready for the start of the new season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he has given Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski an extended break after their exploits at the World Cup finals.

The trio were part of the Germany squad that won the tournament in Brazil, but Wenger, who has voiced his displeasure regarding the pre-season schedule, has admitted that they are unlikely to feature against Crystal Palace on the opening weekend of the campaign.

The Frenchman told reporters: "I've given them a good break because I've experience of players who have been far in the World Cup. You need a rest.

"Will they be ready? I think that Mertesacker certainly because he prepares individually very well. They have a little chance.

"For the first game, I don't think they will be ready for August 16. They come back beginning on August 11. All three."

Wenger could target the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League qualifier for a potential return of three of the key members of his first-team squad.
