Emmanuel Petit: 'Arsenal should target League Cup success'

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit believes that the Gunners cannot afford to view the League Cup as any less important in their search for silverware.

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has insisted that the Gunners should leave no stone unturned in their bid for silverware this season, ahead of tonight's League Cup clash with Chelsea.

The Gunners host Chelsea this evening following a fine start to the season, with seven wins from nine Premier League games taking them to the top of the table.

He told The Mirror: There are new expectations at Arsenal. Eight years without a trophy is a long time, the fans are starving for success. It doesn't matter what the trophy is, just as long as they win one this season.

"Look at what happened when they lost to Birmingham in the final. The expectations were huge and losing it really hurt them. The Capital One Cup is a trophy, the first one they can win. Psychologically it is huge for Arsenal, they need to end this run and I think they will.

"You cannot afford to make differences between trophies. You need to have a winning spirit which means you go out to win every game. You can't pick and choose. You need a winning mentality, success will bring more success."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger fielded strong sides in the League Cup last season but suffered a humbling defeat to League Two outfit and eventual finalists Bradford City.
