Michael van Gerwen breezes to victory over Nathan Aspinall to win the World Series of Darts Finals for the fifth time in his career.

Michael van Gerwen has recorded an 11-4 victory over Nathan Aspinall to win the World Series of Darts Finals.

Having lost in the first round of the World Matchplay in July, the Dutchman was keen to make a statement at the tournament in Amsterdam.

Four years had passed since the last of his four previous victories in the event, but the home fans went home happy as he eased past Aspinall.

Van Gerwen had survived match darts in the semi-finals to edge out Luke Humphries, yet he had no such issues in a one-sided showpiece.

Although Aspinall only trailed 3-2 at the first interval, Van Gerwen hit a 160 checkout on the way to opening up a 7-3 advantage.

That soon became 10-3 as Aspinall had no answer to the former world number one, and while he reduced the deficit in the 14th leg, Van Gerwen checked out 63 to claim a dominant success, averaging 96.16 in the process.

As well as adding another televised trophy to his collection, Van Gerwen also hit a nine-darter during the early stages of his last-four showdown with Humphries.
