A former cyclist who represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games has allegedly been arrested on suspicion of rape and indecent assault.

The male athlete, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is said to have been released on bail while police carry out their investigation.

According to the Daily Mail, the former Team GB cyclist has now retired from racing but has held a 'prominent position' within the ranks after ending his competitive career.

The report adds that the alleged perpetrator has worked with several big names in the sport, and a statement from British Cycling released to the publication read: "Abuse of any kind has no place in sport.

"We urge anybody with concerns about non-recent or current abuse to report them either directly to the British Cycling safeguarding team by emailing compliance@britishcycling.org.uk, or through the NSPCC's free and independent helpline by calling 0800 614 458."

British Cycling were caught up in controversy earlier this year after announcing an eight-year partnership with oil giants Shell, leading to outrage from environmental groups.

Last month, it was announced that CEO Brian Facer, who was only appointed to the role in January 2021, would step down from his position in the wake of the backlash.
