The high of England's opening day victory over South Africa was punctured at Trent Bridge as they fell to a 14-run defeat at the hands of Pakistan.
Fresh from being skittled for 105 by the West Indies an embattled Pakistan piled on 348 for eight, leaving their hosts in pursuit of a World Cup record.
Joe Root's 107 and Jos Buttler's 103 – the first hundreds of the tournament – took them close but both were dismissed as a tense chase fell short.

There were plenty of handsome hits over the course of the day but given the perceived fragility of the Pakistan top order, perhaps the most important belonged to Fakhar Zaman. When he stepped across his stumps to ramp Woakes over his shoulder for four it was a sign that today would be a different story.

Woakes became the first non-wicketkeeper to take four catches in a one-day international, despite it being an otherwise shoddy day for England's handiwork. In the process he also equalled the World Cup record for an outfielder.
