Australia captain Michael Clarke has told his team to be proud of their performance in their narrow defeat in the opening Ashes Test against England.

The Aussies fell 14 runs short of successfully chasing a target of 311 at Trent Bridge on Sunday as the hosts landed the first blow in the five-match series.

"The boys can hold their heads high," Clarke told Sky Sports News. "It was a wonderful game of cricket but credit to England, they fought well.

"The two best performers in the match were Ian Bell and Jimmy Anderson and England deserved the win."

The second Test gets underway at Lord's on Thursday.
