England endure mixed day in boxing at Commonwealth Games

England endure a mixed day across multiple weight categories in the last-of-16 bouts which were staged on Monday.

Gemma Paige Richardson was the standout performer for England on Monday as she progressed through her last-of-16 tie against Megan Reid.

In the whole of the women's lightweight category, Richardson and Scottish representative Reid were the only two competing in the preliminary round.

Nevertheless, Richardson was able to record a dominant success, winning 30-27 on four of the five scorecards and 29-28 on the remaining one.

Teammate Kiaran MacDonald was equally impressive in the men's flyweight division as he came through in favour of each of judges' scorecards against Sri Lanka's M Vidanalage Ishan Ranjeewa Senevir.

Such was MacDonald's dominance that he posted a couple of 10-8 rounds, prevailing 30-25, 30-26 and three scores of 30-27.

In the final fight of the night involving an English representative, light-heavyweight Aaron Bowen was impressive in dispatching of Nigeria's Innocent Ehwarieme.

While Bowen will be disappointed not to get the stoppage after what was an imposing display, he progressed comfortably with three scores of 30-25 and two of 30-26.

However, there was defeat for featherweight Niall Farrell who was ruthlessly stopped in the first round by Northern Ireland's Jude Gallagher.

Farrell received two standing eight counts during the opening session before the referee opted to stop the bout, sending Gallagher through to the quarter-finals.
