Ireland's Robert Heffernan wins a gold medal in the 50km walk at the World Athletics Championships.

Ireland's Robert Heffernan has picked up a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships by winning the 50km walk.

The 35-year-old has built on his performance from the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he finished fourth in the same event.

A time of three hours, 37 minutes and 56 seconds was enough to secure the gold medal for the Cork-born athlete, who finished 62 seconds ahead of Russia's Mikhail Ryzhov.

Australia's Jarrod Tallent finished third in the final.
