Great Britain win 10 medals European Cross Country Championships

Great Britain win a total of 10 medals at the European Cross Country Championships in Turin, including a senior men's silver for Emile Cairess.

Great Britain rounded off a strong day of competition at the European Cross Country Championships in Turin with a men's silver medal for Emile Cairess.

The 24-year-old posted a time of 29:42 in the 10km course to claim the runners-up spot behind Norwegian powerhouse Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who finished nine seconds quicker in 29:33 to take the gold.

Ingebrigtsen - the reigning Olympic 1500m champion - comfortably retained the title that he won in Dublin last year for his seventh European Cross Country Championships gold medal, having won six titles as a junior.

Cairess managed to out-sprint Isaac Kimeli for the silver medal, as his Belgian compatriot finished three seconds worse off with a time of 29:45 to clinch the bronze.

It was double delight for Norway in the senior races, as the women's title went to Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal in a time of 26:25 - the 32-year-old was also the defending champion from 2021.

Grovdal has now won a medal in every senior women's European Cross Country Championships race since 2015, having achieved four third-placed finishes and one silver in 2019.

The German pair of Konstanze Klosterhalfen (26:29) and Alina Reh (27:19) clinched silver and bronze in the women's race respectively, but a spate of titles would come GB's way earlier in the day.

Charles Hicks successfully defended his men's Under-23 title in a time of 23:40, and his compatriot Zakariya Mahamed won the silver medal after finishing eight seconds worse off.

GB's Will Barnicoat and Ireland's Nicholas Griggs engaged in a fierce battle for the men's Under-20 title, and the former won the gold medal by a second, finishing with 17:40 on the clock compared to Griggs's 17:41.

There were also gold medals to celebrate for GB in the men's Under-23, men's Under-20 and women's Under-23 team events, and the senior women also finished second behind Germany, with France taking the senior men's team title.

Elsewhere, GB clinched another silver and bronze medal in the women's Under-23 event, as Megan Keith (20:08) and Alexandra Millard (20:27) placed second and third on the podium behind Italian champion Nadia Battocletti (19:55).

Finally, Spain's Maria Forero stormed away to win gold in the women's Under-20 race and also clinched the team title with her nation in the same category, while Italy beat Spain by a second to win mixed relay gold.
