St Petersburg to bid for 2022 European Championships

Russian city St Petersburg will bid to become the host of the European Athletics Championships in 2022.

Valentin Balahnichev has revealed that St Petersburg intend to lodge a bid to become the host of the European Athletics Championships in 2022.

After Moscow hosted the World Championships last year, the president of the All Russia Athletics Federation has stated that he has been contacted by Yuri Avdeev, the chairman of the committee of physical sport and culture in St Petersburg, regarding the event in eight years' time.

Balahnichev received a letter from Avdeev saying: "Implementation of the European Championships in Athletics in 2022 received the approval and support of the St Petersburg acting governor Georgy Sergeyevich Poltavchenko."

The most recent European Athletics Championships were held in Zurich last month.
