Sandra Perkovic eyes discus World Championships defence

Discus champion Sandra Perkovic sets her sights on retaining her World Championships title in Beijing later this year.

Czech discus thrower Sandra Perkovic has outlined her intention to defend her title at the World Championships in Beijing later this year.

Perkovic continued her domination at the Diamond League event in Birmingham this afternoon, throwing a meeting record of 69.23m to clinch her fourth triumph of the season.

Having only lost four events over the last four years, Perkovic has now set her sights on retaining her World crown in August.

"I'm very happy because I came here from the Rome Diamond League, only three days until my next competition, and I threw a 69.23, one metre further than I did it in Rome. The stadium and the audience were perfect, and the conditions the same also," she told Sports Mole.

"For me the wind is tricky because you try to throw your distance with no wind, but then you make mistakes. When you stop thinking about the conditions you are just throwing and I threw the best.

"I'm happy with my form because it's the fourth year in a row that I am discus number one in the world, and this year my goal for the season is the World Championship in Beijing. I want to defend my title there, so I need to stay focused and train."

Dani Samuels of Australia and France's Melina Robert-Michon completed the women's discus top three in Birmingham.
