Bodyguard's producer suggests that it is a case of when, not if, a second series will be made.

The producer of political thriller Bodyguard has revealed that he is "confident" a second series will be made in the near future.

The show, which starred Richard Madden as a bodyguard to the home secretary (Keeley Hawes), aired on BBC One in 2018 and drew in huge ratings - with more than 17 million viewers tuning in for the final episode.

According to Simon Heath, chief executive of World Productions - also responsible for Line of Duty - it is a case of when, not if, a follow-up series will go ahead.

"Bodyguard is a big beast to put back together. I'm reasonably confident we will see it in due course," he told Metro.

"I knew it would be compared to Line Of Duty but the excitement I was feeling at each stage of that process made me feel like we were on the right track.

"It was nice because we got to try different things. There are lots of big action sequences in Bodyguard that we probably hadn't done that many of in Line Of Duty up to that point.

"We probably now do more of those as a result of realising we've got the resources and the technical skills."

Jed Mercurio, writer of both Bodyguard and Line of Duty, has previously said that he imagines the former show to run to as many as four series.
