Shep Smith switches from FOX News to CNBC

Shep Smith is to front a new daily show for CNBC, having recently ended his association with FOX News after 23 years.

Long-running FOX News anchor Shep Smith is to present a new show for rival network CNBC, it has been announced.

The 56-year-old had been part of the right-leaning news broadcaster since its launch in 1996 but was firmly non-partisan, making him subject of Twitter criticism from US President and FOX News fan Donald Trump.

Last October Smith announced on his show that he was to leave the station, having asked to be released from his contract.

Now Smith has taken up the post of CNBC's chief general news anchor and chief breaking general news anchor, in addition to hosting a new primetime show The News with Shepard Smith, which will air 7pm weekdays from later in the year.

"Gathering and reporting the news has been my life's work," he said in a statement. "I am honoured to continue to pursue the truth, both for CNBC's loyal viewers and for those who have been following my reporting for decades in good times and in bad.

"CNBC Chairman Mark Hoffman, a journalist himself at his core, presented me with CNBC's vision for a fact-based, hour-long evening news programme with the mission to cut through the static to deliver facts, in context and with perspective.

"I know I found a great home for my newscast. I am excited to be working with the exceptional talent at CNBC and eager to build a team focused on uncovering the news behind the headlines."
