Fernandes, Rashford - Man United injury news and return dates before Newcastle clash

Sports Mole rounds up all of Manchester United's latest injury and suspension news ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

For the final time in the 2023-24 season, Manchester United take to the Old Trafford turf on Wednesday evening, when Newcastle United arrive for a Premier League battle.

The Red Devils were condemned to their 14th league defeat of a forgettable campaign on Sunday, as Arsenal prevailed 1-0 at the Theatre of Dreams thanks to a Leandro Trossard goal.

Man United's latest setback leaves them eighth in the table with a three-point gap to make up to Newcastle and Chelsea, meaning that their hopes of qualifying for Europe via their league position could officially evaporate in midweek.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Man United's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the clash with the Magpies, who sit two places better off than their hosts in sixth spot.

Mason Mount

Status: Out
Type of injury: Unspecified
Possible return date: May 19 (vs. Brighton & Hove Albion)

The luckless Mason Mount was missing from the Arsenal defeat with yet another unspecified issue, and while Wednesday's game is expected to come too soon for him, an appearance on the final day against Brighton & Hove Albion has not yet been ruled out.

Harry Maguire

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: May 25 (vs. Manchester City)

Harry Maguire's muscular injury means that the centre-back will not be seen in the Premier League again this season, but he is pushing to be available for the FA Cup final with Manchester City on May 25.

Raphael Varane

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: May 25 (vs. Manchester City)

Similarly, Maguire's fellow defender Raphael Varane is nursing his own muscular problem and is unlikely to come back into top-flight contention, but the Frenchman might be given the thumbs-up to play at Wembley.

Victor Lindelof

Status: Out
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: May 25 (vs. Manchester City)

Victor Lindelof has now spent almost a month and a half on the sidelines with the hamstring issue he picked up against Brentford at the end of March, and it remains to be seen if he will be passed fit for the FA Cup final.

Lisandro Martinez

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Calf
Possible return date: May 15 (vs. Newcastle United)

A rare slice of encouraging defensive news, Lisandro Martinez was back in full training last week after a calf injury, but he was not risked for the Arsenal game. Erik ten Hag explained that the Argentine needs more time to get back up to speed, so it would be a surprise to see him come back on Wednesday.

Tyrell Malacia

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Tyrell Malacia has been the forgotten man this season, having not played a single competitive game due to a serious knee injury, and he will end the season without an appearance to his name.

Anthony Martial

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Groin
Possible return date: May 15 (vs. Newcastle)

Anthony Martial was seen in the stands on Sunday as Man United fell to defeat to Arsenal, whom he missed out on facing due to his groin operation, but he is now training with the team again and might come into consideration here.

Luke Shaw

Status: Out
Type of injury: Muscle
Possible return date: May 25 (vs. Manchester City)

Ten Hag recently revealed that Luke Shaw had suffered a setback in his recovery from a severe muscle injury, but he is keeping his fingers crossed that the left-back will be fit for the FA Cup final.

Marcus Rashford

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: May 15 (vs. Newcastle)

Marcus Rashford was being put through his paces in training before the Arsenal defeat, but he was ultimately not part of the squad and is facing a race against time to prove his fitness for Wednesday.

Bruno Fernandes

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Wrist
Possible return date: May 15 (vs. Newcastle)

Similarly, Bruno Fernandes was on the cusp of returning from his wrist injury against Arsenal, but Ten Hag had to pull him out at the last moment, so there is still a question mark hanging over his head for Wednesday.

Amad Diallo

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: May 15 (vs. Newcastle)

Amad Diallo carried a serious threat for Man United on Sunday before succumbing to a clash of knees in the 70th minute, but he played down his concern after the game and should be fine for Wednesday.
