Zoe Newson picks up powerlifting bronze at Commonwealth Games

Team England's Zoe Newson wins bronze in the para-powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games as Nigeria's domination of the event continues with another gold and silver.

Team England's Zoe Newson has added a Commonwealth Games bronze medal to her two Olympic ones as Nigeria's domination of the para-powerlifting continued on the Gold Coast this afternoon.

Nigeria have now claimed all 12 gold medals that have ever been up for grabs in para-powerlifting since the sport was introduced to the Commonwealth Games, with Esther Onyema topping the podium at a third consecutive Games.

The event was arguably the most eagerly anticipated of the powerlifting schedule at the Games, with the Nigerian duo of Onyema and Lucy Ejike - both of whom own world records in their respective weight classes - going head to head.

The reduced number of weight categories at the Games meant that they took part in the same competition, with competitors awarded a score based on how much they lift in relation to their bodyweight.

The lighter Oyema broke her own world record for the -50kg category to take gold, producing a best lift of 131kg to surpass her previous mark by five kilograms.

That gave her a final score of 141.6, keeping her clear of compatriot Ejike, who failed with two attempts at 139kg to leave her with a best effort of 133kg.

Both were still some way clear of Newson, though, as the Englishwoman's best lift of 91kg was enough to earn her a bronze medal - having picked up the same colour at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Newson's compatriot Natalie Blake was also competing in the final, but could only manage a best lift of 76kg to finish in sixth place.
