Andy Murray battles into the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open with a three-set win over Gilles Simon.

Andy Murray has fought his way into the quarter-finals of the Erste Bank Open by defeating Gilles Simon in three sets in Austria.

The three-time Grand Slam champion retains hopes of taking Novak Djokovic's world number one spot, but he needs to win the competition in order to keep the campaign alive.

Murray suffered a wobble today as he lost the first set, but he fought back to claim a 4-6 6-2 6-2 victory over Simon in two hours and 41 minutes.

The Scotsman made just five winners in the first set and he failed to find his stride as he committed 24 errors before succumbing to a one-set deficit.

The 29-year-old recovered in the second set, though, as he claimed an early break of serve and eventually saved six break points before battling his way to set point.

Simon, who was hampered by a blister in the third set, failed to claw his way back into the lead as Murray wrapped up the contest.

The Wimbledon champion will play John Isner in the quarter-finals.
