Preview: Bordeaux vs. Brest - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Ligue 1 clash between Bordeaux and Brest, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Brest will be aiming to win their fourth game on the bounce in Ligue 1 when they travel to the Matmut Atlantique to take on Bordeaux on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts managed to hold Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-2 draw in their most recent outing, whereas Brest travelled back from Metz with three points in the bag following a 2-0 win.

Having witnessed Monaco condemn PSG to their first defeat of the league season since gameweek two, Bordeaux knew that they had a realistic chance of taking points off of the injury-hit and fatigued champions before they made the journey to the Parc des Princes.

PSG youngster Timothee Pembele made his debut against Bordeaux, but the 18-year-old had a game to forget as he turned into his own net with only 10 minutes on the clock, but Thomas Tuchel's men soon turned the tie around thanks to goal from Neymar and Moise Kean.

Bordeaux seemed destined to be heading towards another defeat before Yacine Adli popped up with the equaliser mere moments after coming off the bench, with the former PSG starlet curling in a delightful first-time effort to ensure that both French powerhouses walked away with a point apiece in that one.

Adli refused to celebrate against his old club but the Bordeaux faithful have every right to, although that result has done little to help their league position as Jean-Louis Gasset's men occupy 13th spot in the table heading into gameweek 13.

In fairness, Les Girondins have had to navigate a daunting run of fixtures with Monaco, Montpellier, Rennes and PSG over the past few weeks, and Sunday's visit of Brest will not be so straightforward either given the visitors' recent winning streak.

Bordeaux have already played out four draws this season - as well as picking up the same number of wins and defeats - but Brest are the only team in the division yet to walk away from an encounter with one point to show for it.

Olivier Dall'Oglio's men have established a pattern in Ligue 1 - lose a certain number of games before prevailing in the same amount - with Brest currently on a three-game winning streak after three straight losses in October.

Having already overcome Lille and Saint-Etienne in November, Les Pirates maintained their 100% record last month with a 2-0 victory away to Metz, with Irvin Cardona notching up his fourth and fifth goals of the season in that fixture last Sunday.

Brest are currently two points better off than Bordeaux in the table, and the 21 strikes that Dall'Oglio's men have notched up can only be bettered by Monaco and PSG, but Brest have also shipped the second most goals in the division (23) behind Strasbourg (24).

Les Pirates overcame Bordeaux 2-0 in last season's Coupe de la Ligue, but the most recent meeting between the two sides ended in a 1-1 stalemate back in February.

Team News

Samuel Kalu in action for Bordeaux on October 4, 2018© Reuters

Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu has been plauged with injuries this term and was not involved against PSG, but the Nigeria international is expected to return to the fold this weekend.

Kalu's return is likely to see Hwang Ui-jo drop down to the bench, and Gasset's only other injury concern is Mexer, who is nursing a hamstring problem.

Adli's peach of a goal against PSG has certainly put him in contention for a starting place, but it is difficult to see the 20-year-old displacing the veteran Hatem Ben Arfa.

Brest also have little in the way of injury concerns, with long-term absentee Denys Bain the only player unavailable to Dall'Oglio this weekend.

Romain Philippoteaux is back in the fold but is unlikely to be considered for a spot in the first XI, while Christophe Herelle will similarly be vying for a recall to the defence after overcoming an injury himself.

Bordeaux possible starting lineup:
Costil; Kwateng, Pablo, Koscielny, Sabaly; Basic, Otavio; Oudin, Ben Arfa, Kalu; Maja

Brest possible starting lineup:
Larsonneur; Pierre-Gabriel, Duverne, Chardonnet, Perraud; Honorat, Lasne, Belkebla, Faivre; Mounie, Cardona

We say: Bordeaux 2-2 Brest

Bordeaux will be expected to have some joy against the leaky defence of Brest, but Les Girondins must be wary of Les Pirates' firepower at the other end of the pitch. Brest are yet to share the spoils this season but we think that will change here, as this game has a high-scoring draw written all over it.
