Wham's Last Christmas finally reaches number one after 36 years

Wham's 'Last Christmas' finally hits number one on the UK singles chart, 36 years after its original release.

Festive classic 'Last Christmas' has finally made it to the top of the UK singles chart some 36 years after its first release, according to the Official Charts Company.

The Wham track was famously the highest-selling song never to make number one, and after flirting with the top spot multiple times over the years, it finally takes the honour after racking up some 9.2 million streams over the last week.

The news comes almost four years to the day after the death of George Michael and follows just weeks after Mariah Carey's 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' reached number one 26 years after its original release.

Overall, 28 festive tracks make up this week's Top 40, including a debut for Jose Feliciano's 'Feliz Navidad' some 50 years after its release, while elsewhere, surprise new Ed Sheeran track 'Afterglow' moves up 17 places to 13.

On the albums chart, Michael Buble's Christmas is back on top after nine years, while Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia rises 15 places to number three.
