Prince Andrew's infamous interview with Emily Maitlis for Newsnight in 2019 is to be made into a film.

Prince Andrew's infamous interview on Newsnight is being developed into a feature film.

In November 2019, The Queen's second son gave an in-depth interview to the BBC's Emily Maitlis in which he was quizzed about his friendship with the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who had died by apparent suicide in prison several months earlier, as well as allegations that he had engaged in sex with a teenage girl trafficked by him.

Andrew's responses drew widespread condemnation for lacking empathy and responsibility - and the ensuing outrage led to him being retired from all Royal duties and disappearing from public view.

Former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister, who helped to secure the interview, wrote a book about the saga and now her account is being adapted into a movie called Scoop.

Peter Moffat, the film's writer, said: "What the hell did he think he was doing? Who got him to do it? Why, when the rest of the world was so appalled, did he think it had gone so well? What kind of a man is this?

"In researching the film and talking to those on the inside of this extraordinary story I got the answers to all these questions.

"They're provoking, often surprising, sometimes disturbing – and I think they make for a compelling story about power and abuse and journalistic courage."

Scoop will enter production later this year for an anticipated release in 2023.
