ITV is rumoured to be exploring the possibility of bringing back Pop Idol for a new series in 2023.

Pop Idol could reportedly return to ITV next year after a 20-year break.

The singing competition ran for two series and made a household name out of judge Simon Cowell, who then went on to launch his own show, The X Factor, which replaced Pop Idol in the schedules.

ITV dropped The X Factor after its 2018 run amid falling ratings and format fatigue, but according to Metro, the network is in the "early stage" of returning to the genre with a surprise revival of Pop Idol.

Responding to the rumours, an ITV spokesperson told the Daily Star that "absolutely nothing is confirmed" yet, but added that Idol "would be unlikely to return as a full series".

The show last aired in December 2003, when Michelle McManus was crowned the series two winner.
