The BBC is reportedly developing a spinoff of The Apprentice featuring young tech entrepreneurs as the candidates.

The business-based reality show - fronted by Lord Sugar - has been a staple of the BBC schedules since 2005 and will return for its 17th series in the new year.

According to The Sun, the main show could soon be accompanied by a spinoff version with "fledgling millennial techies in their late teens and early twenties" - although Lord Sugar is unlikely to be part of the project if it does go ahead.

A source told the newspaper: "Of course Lord Sugar would be the automatic first thought when developing any kind of UK show relating to The Apprentice.

"But the blue sky thinkers at production company Naked have toyed with the idea of someone else doing the hiring and firing in the new version.

"And that someone might be an individual closer to the age of those taking part and have more experience in the tech world of the 2020s."

The BBC has previously spun off the show in the form of Young Apprentice, which aired for three series between 2010 and 2012.
