Donald Trump may be reinstated on Facebook early next year, according to the company's global affairs president Sir Nick Clegg.

Sir Nick Clegg, the former deputy prime minister and now global affairs president of Meta, has confirmed that Donald Trump could be allowed to return to Facebook in January.

The 76-year-old - US President from 2017 to 2021 - was banned by the platform 20 months ago following the horrific assault on the US Capitol by his supporters in the wake of Joe Biden's election as President.

At the time Facebook said that the situation would be reviewed after two years, and now Clegg has reaffirmed that the case will be looked at in the coming months as Trump flirts with a run for office again in 2024.

"I'm very mindful that if you have this significant ability to take decisions which affect the public realm as a private sector company, you need to act with great caution and reticence," Clegg said to a conference in Washington.

"You shouldn't throw your weight about. American democracy is not our democracy - it's your democracy."

Prior to his ban Trump had around 35m supporters on Facebook.
