Helena Bonham Carter, David Mitchell join comedy The Cleaner

Helena Bonham Carter and David Mitchell are among the new cast members announced for new BBC comedy The Cleaner.

Helena Bonham Carter and David Mitchell have joined the cast of Greg Davies's new BBC comedy The Cleaner.

The series - based on a German format - stars Davies as Wicksy, a cleaner who specialises in removing all scenes of death from crime scenes after forensic investigations have finished.

As well as Carter and Mitchell, The Cleaner will also star comedy veteran Stephanie Cole, Game of Thrones actor Donald Sumpter, Years & Years' Ruth Madeley and '90s EastEnders star Shobu Kapoor.

"I'm thrilled that this remarkable collection of actors has agreed to appear next to me on screen," said Davies, who has also written the show. "Scrubbing up blood in a hazmat suit in front of them will be a pleasure."

Shane Allen, the BBC's commissioning controller for comedy, said: "I pinched myself when I saw all this comedy and acting royalty in one show.

"It's all down to Greg's well-hewn scripts which take us in to different character worlds in surprising and funny ways each week, as Wicky has a transformative effect on those he comes across.

"The Cleaner delivers on BBC One's unique commitment to make UK comedy for a mainstream audience."

The show is expected to debut later this year.
