Disney+ to fix 'The Simpsons' cropping issue next month

Disney+ announces that it intends to correct its aspect ratio problems with older episodes of The Simpsons by the end of next month.

Disney+ has vowed to correct its aspect ratio problem with old episodes of The Simpsons by the end of next month.

The streaming service finally launched in the UK last week to much fanfare with an extensive library of programming and films from the Marvel franchise, Star Wars and Disney.

Disney+ also has the first 29 seasons of The Simpsons, although users were quick to complain about the aspect ratio of the older episodes.

The first 19-and-a-half seasons were produced in the old 4:3 format before the show adopted a 16:9 widescreen format part way through its 20th season.

Rather than preserving the full picture in a 4:3 letterbox format, however, Disney+ has stretched and cropped the old episodes to fit 16:9 screens, meaning that some of the picture is absent.

In a post on Twitter on Thursday, Disney+ confirmed: "We appreciate our fans' patience and are working to make the first 19 Seasons (and part of 20) of #TheSimpsons available in 4:3 versions on #DisneyPlus. We expect to accomplish this by the end of May."

Disney+ is available for £5.99 a month or an annual subscription of £59.99.
