Ian McShane defends the delay to John Wick prequel Ballerina, describing it as "new shoots" rather than reshoots.

John Wick star Ian McShane has defended the delay to upcoming prequel movie Ballerina, explaining that they are filming "new shoots" rather than reshoots.

The film - set between the third and fourth movies in the franchise - follows the character of ballerina-assassin Rooney (Ana de Armas) as she attempts to avenge the murdered members of her family.

Filming originally took place between November 2022 and February 2023 ahead of an anticipated release date of June 2024, but that date was pushed back by a year after it emerged this month that director Len Wiseman and producer Chad Stahelski are filming new scenes.

"It's not reshoots, it's new shoots," McShane, who plays The Continental manager Winston Scott in the franchise, told The One Show.

"They're shooting for Ballerina, which is the spinoff with Ana de Armas of the John Wick franchise. You know, it's like they've got to protect the franchise. And obviously I did it, when was it?

"We did it about a year ago, we did the movie Ballerina and they've looked at it, and Chad's come in, the guy who directed all the John Wick movies, and they want to make it better.

"Because they have to protect it. Because Keanu [Reeves] is in it as well, and it takes place between John Wick 3 and John Wick 4."

Ballerina is now scheduled for release on June 6, 2025.
