Dune director Denis Villeneuve hints that plans for a third movie are in the early stages.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has suggested that he has already begun provisional work on a potential third movie.

The first film in the epic sci-fi series, which stars Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, grossed more than $400m (£315m) upon its release in 2021 and the second instalment is due out next year.

The movies are an adaptation of Frank Herbert's novels from the 1960s and '70s, with the events of his first book being covered in the first two movies.

A third film would be based on the first of the sequel novels, Dune Messiah, with four other sequels and several prequels also available to draw upon for any future films beyond that.

"If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream," Villeneuve told Empire.

He added: "I will say, there are words on paper..."

Dune: Part Two is due for release on March 15, 2024.
