Avatar: The Way of Water surpasses the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, 14 days after its initial release.

Avatar: The Way of Water has passed the significant milestone of $1 billion (£830m) at the worldwide box office.

James Cameron's sequel to the 2009 original - the highest-grossing film of all time - was released a fortnight ago and has steadily built up its box office receipts, in spite of the deadly cold weather front sweeping across North America.

By the end of Tuesday the film had grossed $317.1m (£262.9m) domestically and $712.7m (£590.9m) overseas for a total of $1.025 billion.

The figures make The Way of Water the quickest film to reach $1 billion in 2022, surpassing Top Gun: Maverick (31 days) and Jurassic World: Dominion (four months).

Cameron has previously claimed that the movie - the first of four planned sequels - will need to generate $2 billion to break even, although industry analysts have estimated profitability after the $1.5 billion mark.
