The BBC iPlayer received a record 570 million requests in May amid the coronavirus lockdown, the corporation announces.

The BBC iPlayer enjoyed a new record month in May with around 570 million requests, the corporation has revealed.

The streaming service has been hit with a surge in demand over the last few months amid the coronavirus lockdown, with the previous best of 564 million requests set in April.

The fourth episode of the third season of Killing Eve was the single most requested episode during the month, with 4 million requests, while the fifth episode logged 3.42 million requests.

The other eight spots in the top 10 are taken up by episodes of hit drama Normal People, which has now been requested a staggering 54 million times since its release at the end of April.

"BBC iPlayer continues to rise higher with yet another record-breaking month in May - 72% more programme requests than a year ago, it's been the only place to binge on the wonderful new hit series Normal People and the place to see returning favourite Killing Eve first," said iPlayer controller Dan McGolpin.

"Before the lockdown period began and all the way through it, iPlayer has been providing a unique mix of entertaining, informative and educational television whenever and wherever people want it."

Other strong performers on iPlayer in May included The A Word (1.26 million for season three, episode 1), EastEnders (1.22 million for the May 5 episode) and Charlie Brooker's Antiviral Wipe (873,000).
