Holby City star David Ames joins the cast of Hollyoaks playing the new head teacher at Hollyoaks High.

David Ames has joined the cast of Hollyoaks playing Carter Shepherd, the new head teacher at Hollyoaks High.

The actor starred as Dominic Copeland in medical drama Holby City from 2013 until the show's axe a year ago and has also appeared in Doctors and the Doctor Who special 'Planet of the Dead'.

Carter arrives in the village to take over the school but also to reconnect with his daughter Freya Calder, who was left with life-changing injuries as the result of a minibus crash caused by John Paul (James Sutton).

The character of Freya was last seen in October but actress Ellie Henry will be reprising the role full time as part of the new storyline.

Ames said: "I am incredibly excited to join the Hollyoaks cast as such an intricately layered character with a very poignant and vital storyline to come."

On reprising her role, Henry said: "I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to Hollyoaks! Last year saw a lot of life changing events for Freya, she is now navigating life as a disabled young person without her mum which gives us so much to explore.

"She's also had a little transformation in the time she's been away which is exciting. We have so much coming up this year that I cannot wait for people to see!"

The characters will be seen on screen from July.
