The character of Liam Butcher arrives back in EastEnders after six years away from Albert Square.

Liam Butcher made a surprise return to EastEnders tonight after six years away from Albert Square.

The older brother of Tiffany (Maisie Smith) paid an unannounced visit to see her and his half-sister Whitney (Shona McGarty), making his entrance by giving them an anonymous bottle of champagne at Ruby's.

Later, after coming face to face with Tiff's estranged husband Keegan (Zack Morris), Liam took a mystery phone call and frantically promised the caller that he would have their money soon.

In next week's episodes Liam, who has spent the last few years living in Germany with dad Ricky, sets his sights on The Arches as he looks to land the quick buck he needs.

The character of Liam has been recast, with Alfie Deegan taking over from James Forde, who played him between 2008 and 2015.

Liam's return to the square is described as being only for "a short stint".
