Charlie Brooks confirms that she is leaving her role as Janine Butcher on EastEnders over the New Year.

EastEnders star Charlie Brooks has confirmed that Janine Butcher will be leaving Walford over the New Year period.

The iconic character returned to the Square a year ago and she has since formed a relationship with Mick Carter (Danny Dyer), going to extreme lengths to prevent him from reuniting with childhood sweetheart Linda (Kellie Bright).

In episodes which aired last week, Janine discovered that she was pregnant by Mick - and decided not to go through with a termination before excitedly announcing their happy news to a packed Queen Vic, including Linda.

Dyer is leaving the soap this Christmas, although it is unknown whether Mick's exit will come in conjunction with that of Janine, or whether her departure will follow on shortly afterwards.

According to The Sun, the imminent return of her brother Ricky (Sid Owen) for a short stint will also play a part in her exit story.

"I was only ever due back to EastEnders for a year, but when [exec producer] Chris Clenshaw presented me with his idea for the story, I couldn't say no to staying a little longer," she told the newspaper.

"I've had an amazing time, as I always do when I go back.

"But as always with Janine, she probably should not outstay her welcome - for everyone's sake."

Brooks has played the role of Janine on and off since 1999.
