John Bishop unveiled as new Doctor Who companion

Comedian John Bishop will replace Bradley Walsh as a companion in the next series of Doctor Who.

Comedian John Bishop has been confirmed as a new companion for the upcoming 13th series of Doctor Who.

The 54-year-old will join Jodie Whittaker's Doctor in the TARDIS after Bradley Walsh left the show during this year's festive special, 'Revolution of the Daleks', which aired on New Year's Day.

Tosin Cole has also left the show but Mandip Gill's Yaz is remaining as a companion to the Doctor alongside Bishop's character Dan, who will be introduced early in the next series.

"If I could tell my younger self that one day I would be asked to step on board the TARDIS, I would never have believed it," Bishop said of his casting.

"It's an absolute dream come true to be joining Doctor Who and I couldn't wish for better company than Jodie and Mandip."

Showrunner Chris Chibnall added: "It's time for the next chapter of Doctor Who, and it starts with a man called Dan. Oh, we've had to keep this one secret for a long, long time.

"Our conversations started with John even before the pandemic hit. The character of Dan was built for him, and it's a joy to have him aboard the TARDIS."

Filming on the new series, which will air towards the end of this year, has now been underway for several months.
