News industry veteran Alastair Stewart signs up to host a new weekend show on GB News.

GB News has announced the signing of veteran news presenter Alastair Stewart ahead of the channel's impending launch.

The 68-year-old is the UK's longest-serving TV news anchor, with 45 years' experience of local and national news, including a lengthy stint with ITN.

Last January he decided to step down as a presenter of ITV News after getting into a spat with a follower on social media, and since last summer he has been working for talkRADIO.

On GB News Stewart will host a weekend news and current affairs show, joining an impressive lineup of on-air talent including Andrew Neil, Simon McCoy, Colin Brazier and Kirsty Gallacher.

"GB News is a unique opportunity to broaden the spectrum, challenge the groupthink and shift away from a predictable agenda in news and debate," said Stewart.

"I can't wait to get stuck in and tackle issues that really matter to people across the United Kingdom."

John McAndrew, GB News director of programmes, added: "Alastair is hugely respected across the country and we are honoured to have a journalist of his calibre and experience on board. He will anchor GB News in more ways than one."

Although an exact launch date has yet to be revealed, GB News hopes to begin broadcasting before the end of June.
