Newcastle United are reportedly set to open talks with defender Fabian Schar over a new contract.

Newcastle United are reportedly set to open talks with Fabian Schar over a new contract.

Schar has formed a formidable partnership with Sven Botman in the centre of the Newcastle defence this season.

Eddie Howe's side ended the 2022-23 campaign with the joint-best defensive record alongside Manchester City after conceding just 33 goals in 38 games.

Their resolute backline proved to be a key factor behind their fourth-placed finish, securing their place in the Champions League.

Schar started 36 of the club's 38 Premier League games, and Newcastle are keen to secure the long-term future of one of their key defenders.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are expected to open talks with Schar over a new contract in the near future.

Schar's current deal will expire in June 2024, and he will be able to start negotiating pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs in January.

The Magpies are wary of losing the centre-back on a free transfer next year, and they also want to reward him for his impressive performances in a successful campaign.

Since joining Newcastle in 2018, Schar has made 141 appearances for the club, contributing 10 goals and six assists.

Schar previously played in 13 Champions League games during his time with Basel, and he will be looking forward to competing in the competition for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Despite working away on a new deal for Schar, Newcastle are still expected to bolster their backline this summer, especially with Jamaal Lascelles set to depart on a free transfer his contract expires next month.

A recent report claimed that the Magpies are set to rival Manchester United for the signature of Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae.

The South Korea international is under contract until 2025 with an option of a further two years, but his deal contains a release clause that becomes active for a limited period in July.
