Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp confirms that Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister will miss Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester United through injury.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that midfielder Alexis Mac Allister will miss Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester United.

The Argentina international is currently sidelined after he sustained an injury in a 2-0 win over Sheffield United last Wednesday.

Mac Allister sustained a cut on his knee and initially carried on with it bandaged up before he was forced off and replaced by Curtis Jones in the 59th minute.

After being absent for Saturday's win against Crystal Palace, Mac Allister is now set to miss games against Union SG and Man United.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's Europa League meeting with Union SG, Klopp revealed the player's injury is more complicated than it first looked.

The Liverpool boss told reporters: "I am obviously not a doctor but they explain it to me pretty much every day why he is not ready yet and it is obviously a bit more tricky than we thought in the first moment.

"The other boy stepped on his knee and the stud went through pretty much the muscle onto the bone. And now we have to wait until the bone is healed and until Macca can deal with the pain, because it is pretty painful.

"Macca is actually a super tough guy so we have probably to make sure just from an infection point of view nothing happens. That's really important.

"I never had this injury for one of my players before but now we have it. I hope it will not take that long, I would like to say it's day by day – but that would look like he could maybe play the next game but he will not be ready for that as well. So, I hope the next three or four days he makes big steps and then we will see."

Mac Allister is joined on the sidelines by Joel Matip, Andrew Robertson, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota.

The Reds have also rested Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah for Thursday's dead-rubber against Union SG.

With Liverpool already guaranteed top spot in Group E, Klopp has got one eye on Sunday's Premier League clash with rivals Man United.

The Merseyside club will head into the weekend as the league leaders after collecting 37 points from their 16 league matches.
