Barcelona president Joan Laporta is reportedly considering sacking manager Ronald Koeman, with Xavi a candidate to take over in Catalonia.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is reportedly considering sacking Ronald Koeman following the club's underwhelming season.

The Dutchman has claimed one piece of silverware in the form of the Copa del Rey, but Barca suffered a last-16 exit to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and a 2-1 defeat to Celta Vigo at the weekend ended their La Liga title chances.

Koeman's contract at Camp Nou does not expire until the end of next season, and he wants the club's "absolute confidence" to stay in control of the reins until 2022.

The Blaugrana boss is set to meet with president Laporta at the end of the season to discuss his future, but Marca claims that the Barca chief is considering whether to sack Koeman before the start of next season.

However, the report claims that relieving Koeman of his duties would worsen Barca's already volatile financial situation, even though the former Everton and Netherlands manager is deemed to have "failed" at the club.

Ex-Barcelona midfielder Xavi is thought to be a leading candidate to take over from Koeman, despite penning a new deal with Qatari champions Al-Sadd last week.
