Former The X Factor star Janet Devlin will open up on her battle with alcohol in a new one-off BBC documentary.

Singer-songwriter Janet Devlin is to present a one-off documentary about alcoholism among young females for BBC Northern Ireland.

The 27-year-old shot to fame appearing on The X Factor in 2011, after which she spiralled into alcohol addiction, self-harm and attempts to take her own life.

Now six years sober, Devlin will talk openly about her past in the programme, as well as speaking to experts about why young women in particular are now drinking more than ever.

Speaking to camera in the show, she says: "Addiction to the most socially accepted addictive drug in the world can, and will, take every ounce of goodness from your life."

Janet Devlin: Young, Female And Addicted airs Monday, February 28 at 10.35pm on BBC One Northern Ireland and iPlayer.
