Vernon Kay will reportedly take over from Ken Bruce in his mid-morning slot on Radio 2 from April 3.

Vernon Kay is reportedly on the verge of being announced as Ken Bruce's successor at Radio 2.

After 45 years at the BBC, including 39 on Radio 2, Bruce revealed last month that he will be leaving the station in March to pursue other projects.

Bruce's mid-morning show, which airs from 9.30am to 12pm, is the most prestigious slot on British radio and has more than 8.5 million listeners each week.

According to The Sun, ex-Family Fortunes host Kay, 48, has now landed the coveted job on a two-year contract.

"Ken's show is the most listened to in Europe so Vernon has massive shoes to fill," a source told the newspaper. "But he's such a warm, easy presenter and listeners have really taken to him.

"Vernon has a raft of fresh, new ideas and content, but will not be trying to reinvent the wheel here - he knows how important this show is to listeners, and wants them to feel welcome and safe.

"Everyone at the Beeb is hugely excited to have him on board."

Kay's first show is expected to air on April 3, with an official announcement from the BBC due this Monday.
