The Queen, Prince Philip receive coronavirus vaccine

Buckingham Palace announces that The Queen and Prince Philip have been given a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

The Queen and Prince Philip have received the coronavirus vaccine, it has been announced by Buckingham Palace today.

The UK is now engaged in a mass immunisation programme at record speed, with the government aiming to vaccinate around 15 million people by the middle of February.

Frontline health workers and members of the population aged 80 and over are among the first in line for the injections and as of Friday around 1.5 million had received at least one of the two required vaccination doses.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that The Queen, 94, and her 99-year-old husband Philip - the longest-lived male member of the British Royal family in history - were given their first jabs at Windsor Castle today.

The news suggests that the couple were not pushed to the front of the queue for the vaccine, with the first doses having been offered to the public more than a month ago.

The Royal Family do not normally comment on matters relating to their health but according to BBC News, The Queen approved making news of their vaccinations public to avoid speculation.
