Dame Vera Lynn: "The spirit of the Blitz is very much here"

Dame Vera Lynn backs the British public to pull together through the coronavirus crisis as the worldwide death toll approaches 75,000.

Dame Vera Lynn has backed the British public to pull together as the coronavirus pandemic escalates yet further.

The worldwide death toll from COVID-19 now stands at almost 75,000 people, while Prime Minister Boris Johnson has tonight been transferred to intensive care as he battles the disease.

Lynn, who turned 103 last month, became known as the Forces' Sweetheart during World War II with her inspiring anthem 'We'll Meet Again' - a line used by The Queen in her address to the nation on Sunday night.

"We'll Meet Again is such a hopeful song and it still applies today, especially during this crisis, when friends and family are apart," Lynn told The Sun. "The spirit of the Blitz is very much here, as retired doctors and nurses return to work to help out, which is wonderful of them.

"I watched the speech, which was wonderful, but I didn't know she was going to finish with the words 'We will meet again'.

"I have met the Queen on a number of occasions. You have to have something and someone we can look up to and rely on in times of trouble and Her Majesty is that person."

Following The Queen's reference on Sunday, 'We'll Meet Again' rose to number 22 on the iTunes chart and is now being tipped to crack into the top 40 this week.
